The Renal Diet

A dietitian will be made available to you soon after diagnosis of renal failure. Dietary advice differs according to the stage of kidney failure and the type of treatment given. Haemodialysis patients are often put on a low potassium, low calcium diet. You may be shocked by the foods which should be restricted and it appears that these are often foods which you were previously encouraged to eat!

Kidney patients should only alter their diet when advised to do so by their doctor or dietician.

You will start understanding what isn't good for you and why and then you should find it easier to stick to the diet - it isn't as difficult as you may first think! If in any doubt always ask your dietitian.

Most dialysis patients (especially haemodialysis) must restrict their fluid intake (this does not just apply to drinks, but to how much liquid is contained in food). You will need to stick to your recommended fluid level and will feel better on dialysis as a result.

The Renal Dietitian and nursing staff will be able to give you advice about this.
