Holidays for Kidney Patients

We all need a break from time to time and kidney patients are no exception!

SCKPA members can book the SCKPA caravan between May and September. See Highcliffe Caravan page for more information.

Most kidney patients can travel anywhere in the world but last minute bookings are not likely to be possible. It is essential to check with your renal unit before planning any trip as special arrangements will need to be made.

Anyone with a pre-existing medical condition will need a letter from a doctor confirming that they are fit to travel in order to get travel insurance and special travel insurance is essential. This is true for dialysis and transplant patients. Your renal care team can provide you with information on any immunisations required.

Haemodialysis patients can plan a short trip away in-between dialysis sessions or longer trips which need more planning regarding visiting other dialysis units. Peritoneal dialysis patients on the other hand are free to travel anytime. Make sure that you check with you renal unit first and take plenty of dialysis supplies with you.

A very useful site for haemodialysis patients wanting to travel abroad (in particular) is Global Dialysis where you can find a dialysis unit close to where you are staying and can check details regarding payment, treatment type, etc.
